Groupings
Children are grouped according to ability, this is based on
the previous years progress/levels, confidence and
attitude to work. Children may swap groups throughout
the year.
Children are in ability groups for Literacy, Math’s, Guided
Reading and Science.
Targets for progression
All pupils have their targets for Literacy, Numeracy and
Science in their books based on their attainment last year.
This will help to enable them to focus and what they need to
do next to make further progress in the subject.
Change from Levels
Children’s work used to be marked using Levels, however
this year we will be changing to APS scores.
APS scores in relation to Levels
W (6)
Average End of Year 1 Score 11 APS (1A)
1c( 7/8)
1b(9)
1a(11) (Reception Exceeding)
2c(13)
2b(15)
Average End of Year 2 Score 15 APS (2B)
2a(17)
3c(19)
Children are expected to make 4 APS
3b(21)
points a year.
Assessment
Your child’s progress is monitored on a daily basis so
areas of difficulty can be tackled straight away.
There will also be half term assessments in Maths,
Literacy and Science to check that they are on
course to meet their targets set for the year.
If we are concerned about your child’s progress we
will come and speak to you as soon as possible to
ensure we can support them.
We have parents evening in November and March
but please come and see us if you are concerned.
Reading
ERIC (Everybody Reading in Class) takes place 3 days a week after
lunch- 15 minutes independent reading or reading activities.
Reading Books
On Monday children did bring home their reading book. They will
change this book every Monday as long as they bring back the previous
book. There stage reading book matches their comprehension level so if
they are reading the words easily, ask them questions about the story
throughout to help improve their understanding. As the children bring
home one book a week please read other books, magazines, etc with
your child at home to extend their vocabulary.

Times Tables
By the time children leave year 2 most of
them should know all their tables 10, 2, 5, 3
and 4.
However children also need to understand
the concept of times tables so to start with
counting in 10s, 2s and 5s would be a good
start.
Homework
Homework is set to consolidate what is being learnt in the
class during the week and to allow them to learn to work
independently.
They will have spellings and spelling sentences set on a
Friday.
Each Friday they will be given a piece of Maths homeworkthis will be expected in the following Thursday (Wednesday
for Year 1).
