Stages of IWB use
Stage One
Old Things in Old Ways
Some features of a classroom where the teacher is doing ‘old things’
in the same ‘old way’.
• Primarily use Word documents, scanned texts and diagrams
• Use networked programs like excel or PowerPoint rather than
web based
• Notes and diagrams handwritten on board as lesson is taught
• Usually not prepared in advance of lesson
• Usually not saved at end of class
• Teacher working in isolation – not sharing resources with others
• Very limited use of the IWB’s toolset
• Often only teacher using the board – expensive version of chalk
and talk

Stage Two
Old Things in New Ways
Some features of a classroom where the teacher is doing ‘old things’ in the ‘new
ways’
• Modifying existing paper based activities and worksheets for the IWB
• Greater use of resources from web or IWB gallery
• Using network and web based software that works on IWB e.g. Google Earth
• Most or all lessons saved for future use and shared with staff to reduce workload
• Decrease in paper use for ‘worksheets’, less copying, maybe less teacher standing
out front
• Students starting to use IWB in group work, for their presentations, to
demonstrate, problem solve (e.g Maths) and create e.g. Art, Design
• Noticeable increase in level of student interest and engagement
• Noticeable increase in students’ basic skill level on board (using IWB Tools)
• Using premade flipcharts e.g. From Promethean Planet and making some minor
changes
• Moving to making very simple flipcharts with dragable layered objects that can
be moved around the screen, revealing or hiding existing words an objects

The problem with this stage is
that often teachers think they
have ‘arrived’! While it is a great
start, this is still ‘old things in new
ways’. We have to help ourselves
and our colleagues move to …
Stage Three
New Things in New Ways
Some features of a classroom where the teacher is doing ‘new things’ in the ‘new
ways’.
• Extensive use of IWB tools, resources and features
• Using software that enables students to manipulate ideas – seeing what happens
to the final outcome if a variable is changed here or there e.g. Gapminder for
infographics
• Engaging in virtual and simulated environments e.g. virtual tours, Intrepica, Club
Penguin
• Perform dangerous or impractical experiments via simulation e.g. Chemistry!
• Using animations and video
• Accessing vast libraries of interactive learning objects
• Embedding links
• Including high-resolution photo images
And…
…
• Increasing level of student involvement and interactivity: dual pen,
interactive voting systems, personalised content such as
images/footage/art or design work of your students
• Raising questions or posting problems that lead to greater understanding
and deeper insight into a topic
• Incorporating a range of multimedia: podcast, animation, video, simulation,
image, music
• Including your students in the design process: the concepts within the IWB
toolbar and design (e.g. layers and restrictors) are very transferrable.
• Connecting (e.g. Live video conferencing) with global partner classes,
experts, organisations, parents and the community
• Collaborating on joint projects, research
• Creating – and post to blog, web, wikis
Our aim: To use our IWB as a window to our world!

It’s important to understand the concept of
layers in ActiveInspire – as well as many
other programs and web tools.
Working with layers
Action objects and layers – skeleton Science /PE example
Action Objects and layers - This ActivInspire tutorial shows how
to assign actions to objects to reveal objects hidden in multiple
layers. It uses the 'Bring to Front' action. Very simple and very
effective

Add labels
Play with colours
1. Insert a background on
a new flipchart
2. Add labels:
• Single words
• Definitions
• Explanation
1. Open up the flipchart: ‘Ad ‘ed’
2. The white box needs to change
colour. See if you can work out
how to change the colour.
3. Hint: Have the object browser
open on the left so you can see
which layer the box is on.
What’s next?
While we don’t know for sure, we do know it looks like it will
• be developed at a rate much much faster than we have ever seen.
• permeate EVERY level of schooling and every subject area from to
PP-Post Graduate
• become more a part of our personal lives
• More mobile
