How difficult is it to implement
The Nurtured Heart Approach into
schools/How effective is it?
Amy Steidinger
Background on
The Nurtured Heart Approach
•Created by Howard Glasser specifically for parental use with
ADHD children
•"Find your personal wealth"
Background on
The Nurtured Heart Approach
•The goal of the approach is to put your energy into positively
reinforcing the child while not focusing on the negative behavior
•When students follow the rules they get constant rewards
•When students break a rule there is no scolding or bargaining
How is The Nurtured Heart Approach
Implemented in Schools?
Depends on the schools, each school has a different way of
carrying out this appoarch
For example Tolson Elementary School implemented the
program by:
•using oral and written praises
• being strict, there are immediate consequences to bad
behavior or rule breaking but there is little emphasis
based on the negative behavior that is actually displayed
The Effect of The Nurtured Heart Approach at
Tolson Elementary
•Praise notes are given daily
•"The result is happy students and teacher who don't want to
leave school."
•There has only been 1 child suspended
The Effect of The Nurtured Heart Approach at
Tolson Elementary
•No children at all diagnosed as ADHD
•Gifted Program grown from less than 5% to 15%
•There is no longer the high rate of teachers calling in sick on Friday's
and Monday's
Possible Cons
•Not developed specifically for the classroom
•Meant for students with ADHD not "regular" students
Possible Cons
•Cost can be an issue
•"Reset" can become ineffective
•It may become difficult to constantly give praise
Our Opinion of
The Nurtured Heart Approach
•It sounds like a lot of fluff
•We agree that it is a money-making business
•We believe more research is needed
