Respiratory System
Write in complete sentences!
Don’t talk during the Catalyst!
HW ON YOUR DESK!
Catalyst:
1. Describe the function of each of the following:
 Red
blood cells
 Blood plasma
 Right ventricle
 Left ventricle
2.
Describe TWO ways the circulatory system
maintains homeostasis.
Have you ever wondered…
Why people pass out when they
hyperventilate (breathe too fast)?
 What happens when food “goes
down the wrong pipe”?
 Why people pass out if they hold
their breath for too long?

Agenda
Catalyst/HW Review
 Anatomy of the respiratory system
 Back to Homeostasis
 T-SHIIIIRRRRRRTTTTT TIMMMMMEEEEE!
 YOU’RE THE DOCTOR!
 Exit Question

Remember the circulatory system?
Right atrium receives deoxygenated blood
 Right ventricle pumps deoxygenated blood to
the lungs
 Then, the lungs oxygenate the blood


HOW does this happen
Gas exchange

Key Point #1: Oxygen enters your lungs through
a specific path
 Nasal Cavity  Larynx 
Trachea  Right/Left Bronchus 
Alveoli
Nose
 Your
epiglottis and diaphragm help out!
Nasal cavity
Nose
*Epiglottis
Larynx
Trachea
Right
Bronchus
Left Bronchus
Alveoli
*Diaphragm
Gas exchange

Key Point #2: Gas exchange occurs in the alveoli
 Gas
exchange = diffusion of CO2 and O2
 Alveoli = little sacks in lungs
 CO2
from the blood
diffuses into alveoli
(then you breathe it
out)
 O2 from alveoli
(from when you
breathed in) diffuses
into blood
Homeostasis

Key Point #3: The respiratory system
maintains homeostasis by keeping the right
ratio of O2 and CO2 in the blood
inhale O2  O2
diffuses from alveoli to
RBCs
 CO2 diffuses from
blood plasma to
alveoli  breathe out
CO

Checks for Understanding
1.
2.
3.
4.
Trace the path of oxygen as it travels from your
nose to your lungs.
Describe gas exchange. (What is it? Where does
it happen?)
Explain how the respiratory system maintains
homeostasis.
Imagine that a patient falls and cracks her ribs.
The cracked rib pierces the patients right bronchus.
How will this injury prevent her respiratory system
from maintaining homeostasis? (Think: why might
she die?)
T-Shirts!

Expectations
Work
in groups and discuss the questions.
Each person must design their own t-shirt.
Drawings must answer the questions only.
Think before you draw. Remember, you’re
being paid for quality, accurate work!
T-Shirts!

Coming down from the neckline of the t-shirt, draw
the trachea. What does it do?
T-Shirts!

The trachea splits into the right and left bronchus.
Draw them. What do they do?
T-Shirts!

The bronchi are surrounded by lung tissue. Draw the
lungs. Leave room in between the two lungs for the
heart.
T-Shirts!

Draw the alveoli. Draw an arrow pointing at the
alveoli, and explain what they do.
T-Shirts!

In between the lungs, draw the heart. Label EACH
of the four chambers of the heart.
T-Shirts!

Color in BLUE the chambers of the heart that have
DEOXYGENATED blood.
T-Shirts!

Draw a BLUE arrow to show CO2 in deoxygenated
blood being pumped into the lungs. Draw a second
blue arrow showing how that CO2 is breathed out.
T-Shirts!

Draw a RED arrow to show O2 being breathed in
and traveling through the trachea. Color the lungs
red to show that they are rich in O2.
T-Shirts!

Color in RED the chambers of the heart that receive
OXYGENATED blood, thanks to the lungs!!!
T-Shirts!

Below your drawing of the respiratory system, copy
the sentence below and fill in the blank:
“The respiratory system
maintains homeostasis by
_________________________.”
THERE’S A PATIENT IN THE ER!!!

Exit Questions
Write in complete sentences!
Don’t talk during the Exit Question!
What is gas exchange, and where does it
occur?
 OMG, someone shot Ms. S in the lungs and the
bullet pierced her alveoli! 

 Describe
the function of her alveoli.
 How will this injury stop her respiratory system from
maintaining homeostasis? (Think: why will she die?)
