Heart Diagram—flow of blood
Heart
Pumps and delivers blood to the cells in
the body
The heart is the strongest muscle in the
body
It’s an involuntary muscle. The heart
beats 60-80 times per minute (nonexercise) in an adult. In a youth 75-95
times per minute (non-exercise)
Heart
Left side of your heart pumps blood
through the arteries with fresh oxygen—
blood is red
Right side of your heart takes in blood
returning from your veins, blood is
deoxygenated. The blood is blue.
The right side pumps blood to the lungs
where carbon dioxide is exchanged for
oxygen in the lungs

• Inferior Vena Cava
• Pulmonary Veins
Blood
Blood carries food, oxygen, waste, &
hormones
Liquid part of blood is plasma

delivering oxygen
Blood takes in fresh oxygen at the lungs

Blood Types Information
Blood types become very important when a blood
transfusion is necessary. In a blood transfusion, a
patient must receive a blood type that is compatible with
his or her own blood type—that is, the donated blood
must be accepted by the patient's own blood. If the blood
types are not compatible, red blood cells will clump
together, making clots that can block blood vessels and
cause death.
Type O– blood is considered the “universal donor”
because it can be donated to people of any blood type.
Type AB+ blood is considered the “universal recipient”
because people with this type can receive any blood type.

What is Plasma
What is a stethoscope
Plasma
Plasma is 90% water
We have 25 trillion red blood cells,
hundreds of times more red blood cells
than stars of the Milky Way galaxy
If we stacked all our red blood cells on top
of each other, they would reach 30,000
miles in the air
Stethoscope
A device physicians use to hear the sounds
produced by certain organs of the body. Such
as: heart, lungs, intestines, and blood vessels
Before the stethoscope was invented physicians
used to place their ear on a patients chest to
hear the sounds their heart made
Rene Laennec (a French Scientist) made the first
stethoscope in 1816, he made it from a wooden
hollow tube
