1 Peter 3:4
The heart (Gr. kardia) is the center of physical life
(Lev. 17:11) – “the heart of the matter…”
The heart (mind, soul, spirit) in a figurative sense is the
center and seat of one’s spiritual life
The heart of man functions in different ways (Mt. 9:4;
24:48; Mk. 2:6,8; Heb. 4:12)
We will study the gospels to see how the heart functions
We will study Acts and the rest of the NT to see how the
heart functions relative to our salvation
Intellect
Emotion
Will
Conscience
The heart of man is where he thinks, reasons, analyzes,
imagines, ponders, understands, and believes
The heart’s thinking must not be evil (Mt. 9:4; 12:34,35;
15:18-19; Mk. 2:6,8)
The heart’s understanding must be open to truth
(Mt. 13:15)
The heart’s thinking must be fully persuaded (Mk. 11:23)
The heart’s belief must be fully convinced of Jesus Christ
(Lk. 24:25,38)
The heart of man is where he feels emotions (positive or
negative), affections, desires, and trusts
The heart’s feelings must be kept pure (Mt. 5:8,28)
The heart’s feelings must be genuine toward God
(Mt. 15:8; 22:37)
The heart’s feeling must be forgiving (Mt. 18:35)
The heart of man is where he purposes, decides,
determines, intends, and obeys
The heart’s purpose must be on heaven (Mt. 6:21;
Lk. 12:34; 21:34)
The heart of man is where he contemplates right and
wrong, and condemns himself or commends himself
(Rom. 2:15)
The heart’s conscience must not grow hard (Mt. 13:15;
Mk. 3:5; 6:52; Jn. 12:40)
The heart’s conscience must not be evil (Mt. 24:48; Tit.
1:15; Heb. 10:22)
The heart’s conscience must be honest (Lk. 8:15)
Your Heart and Salvation
Becoming a Christian…
The intellect of the heart believes (Acts 8:37; 15:9; 16:4;
28:27; Rom. 10:17)
The emotion of the heart turns toward loving God
(Jn. 14:15)
The will of the heart repents and obeys (Acts 3:19;
11:23; Rom. 16:17)
The conscience of the heart is pricked and cleansed
(Acts 2:37; Heb. 9:14; 10:22; 1 Pet. 3:21)
Your Heart and Salvation
Living as a Christian…
The intellect of the heart is enlightened by truth (Rom.
16:18; 2 Cor. 4:6; Eph. 3:17; Phil. 4:7; Heb. 8:10;
10:16; Jas. 1:26; 2 Pet. 1:19)
The emotion of the heart is focused on Christ and his
church (Acts 2:46; 4:32; Rom. 9:2; 10:1; Eph. 5:19;
6:5; Col. 3:16,22; 1 Tim. 1:5; 2 Tim. 2:22; Heb. 10:22;
Jas. 4:8; 1 Pet. 1:22; 3:15)
The will of the heart is governed by Christ (2 Cor. 9:7;
Col. 3:15; 2 Thess. 3:5)
The conscience of the heart is not hardened (Heb. 3:8 –
4:7), but is assured (1 Jn. 3:19-21)
You know what is in your heart…
God knows what is in your heart (Lk. 16:15; Heb. 4:12;
Rev. 2:23)
The Devil wants to rob your heart (Mt. 13:19; Lk. 8:12)
and deceive your hear (Rom. 16:18)
Guard your heart will all diligence (Prov. 4:23): intellect,
emotions, will, and conscience
Do you need a heart scan?
Do you have heart disease?
Do you need heart surgery?
Do you need a heart transplant?
