want!!
• Matthew 15:18-19
• “But the things that proceed out of the
mouth come from the heart, and those
defile the man. For out of the heart come
evil thoughts, murders, adulteries,
fornications, thefts, false witness,
slanders.”
James vs. Matthew
• James says one
thing- our behavior
comes from our
desires
• Matthew says another
– our behavior comes
from our hearts
What are the intents of the heart?Desires
• Hebrews 4:12
• “For the word of God is living and active
and sharper than any two-edged sword,
and piercing as far as the division of soul
and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and
able to judge the thoughts and intentions
of the heart.”
Proverb 27:19
• “As water reflects a face, so a
man’s heart reflects the man.”
2 Criteria that helps us to see when
a legitimate desire becomes wrong:
• 1. Am I willing to sin in order to get what I
want? And
• 2. Do I respond sinfully when I do get
what I want?
Consequence of Conflict
• Setting ourselves in opposition to God with
our lusts
• Now when we are willing to sin to get what
we want or respond sinfully when we don’t
get what we want, the Bible uses some
strong terms for what is going on in our
heart.
• James 4:4
Why Adultery?
• What is physical adultery?
• - going outside your relationship with
spouse to find pleasure.
• What is spiritual adultery?
• - going outside of relationship with God to
find pleasure.
• “The human spirit that dwells in you envies
intensely”
• You will always be lusting!
• You just have two choices to lust after– God or something else.
– “just two choices on the shelf, pleasing God or
pleasing self”
The role that Deception plays
in stimulating idolatry
• Why do you want what you want?
• Gen 3:1-13
• What was the source of the fall according
to Gen 3:1; 3:13, I Tim 2:14
• Deception – believing there’s a better
way than God’s way.
• When the serpent said “Did God really
say….” what was he trying to do?
• Doubt!
• She doubted God’s goodness and ability
to bring consequences.
Why do you want what you want?
• Because were Deceivers and
Doubters!
• We think there’s a better way!
• Deception vs. Truth
• Doubt vs. Faith
What did doubt lead to?
• Gen 3:6
• Desiring/Lust
• Remember the heart contains our desires
What did the desire lead to?
• End of Gen 3:6
• Disobedience/Sin
• James 1:14-16 says…..
What did Adam and Eve then
experience in verses 7,8,10?
• Distress
– Guilt
– Shame
– This became their state of being!
What did they do with that
experience?
• Diverting/Ducking
• Hide-cover up
• We become Master Coverers
– Alcohol, Porn, Glutens……
What is your Value System?
• Is it ………..
• Matthew 22:37-39
• “You shall love the Lord your God with all
your heart, and with all your soul, and with
all your mind. This is the great and
foremost commandment. The second is
like it, You shall love your neighbor as
yourself.”
Three Treasure Principles
• Matthew 6:19-21
• “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures
upon earth where moth and rust destroy,
and where thieves break in and steal. But
lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven,
where neither moth nor rust destroys, and
where thieves do not break in or steal; for
where your treasure is, there will your
heart be also.”
Principle # 1
Everyone
Lives for
Some kind of
Treasure
Principle # 2
The Thing that
Is Your
Treasure will
Control Your
Heart
Principle # 3
What Controls
Your Heart
will control
Your behavior
Let’s talk about Worship
• You are a worshiper
• Every human being is a worshiper
• Worship=dominate theme of scripture
•
=1st an identity before it’s ever an
activity!
• What’s is our hearts = Worship
Principe # 1
You can’t understand a human
relationship unless you look at it
through worship.
A relationship of unity, understanding, and love is rooted in worship!
Principle # 2
Sin causes us to shrink our lives
to the size of our lives
DNA of Sin
• We need to understand the DNA of sin to
understand worship.
• 2 Cor. 5:14-15
• Romans 1:18-25
Sin
•
•
•
•
•
Always selfish
Self focused – My Kingdom
Moves us to center of our own universe
Is anti-social
Self focused little beings!
• DNA of Sin is self focus and
idolatry
• What rules your heart will exercise
inescapable influence over your life and
behavior (words, actions, choices,
decisions!) in situations, locations and
relationships where GOD has placed you!
Principle # 3
• On this side of heaven, there is always a
war going on between two kingdoms.
Marriage example
• Our marriage is a war zone (deeper war)
• When you get bitter and angry it’s war
between two kingdoms.
• Can’t live in marriage with a peace time
mentality.
• In war time you par down for the war
• Some couples stop working on marriage
Marriage example
• As long as sin exists in the heart, war will
exist.
• They both want to win
• Always relate to spouse in service of one
of two kingdoms
• When you respond out of Kingdom of God
you encourage spouse to respond that
way.
Two Lifestyles
• Kingdom of Self
• Kingdom of God
• Manipulation
• Ministry
• “indulge sinful nature”
• “Serve in love”
What does a relationship that
is rooted in worship look
like?
Practically this is how it looks!
God as Creator
(Your hardwiring)
Worship
God as Sovereign
(Your story)
God as Savior
(Your growth in grace)
