UNCONSCIOUS SINS
Sophomore Chapel Series
March 14-18, 2011
Invocation
Matthew 5:48
(New International Version 1984, ©1984)
Be perfect,
therefore, as your
heavenly Father is
perfect.
48
1 John 3:4
(New International Version 1984, ©1984)
Everyone who sins
breaks the law; in fact,
sin is lawlessness.
4
Leviticus 5:17
(New International Version 1984, ©1984)
17 “If
a person sins and does
what is forbidden in any of
the LORD’s commands, even
though he does not know it,
he is guilty and will be held
responsible.
Hebrews 4:12
For
the word of God is alive and active.
Sharper than any double-edged sword, it
penetrates even to dividing soul and
spirit, joints and marrow; it judges
the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from
God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and
laid bare before the eyes of him to whom
we must give account.
Matthew 15:18-20
(New International Version 1984, ©1984)
But the things that come out of the
mouth come from the heart, and these
make a man ‘unclean.’ 19 For out of the
heart come evil thoughts, murder,
adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false
testimony, slander. 20 These are what
make a man ‘unclean’; but eating with
unwashed hands does not make him
‘unclean.’”

1 John 3:4
(New International Version 1984, ©1984)
Everyone who sins breaks the
law; in fact, sin is lawlessness.
Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death,
but the gift of God is eternal life
in Christ Jesus our Lord.

James 4:17
(New International Version 1984, ©1984)
17
Anyone, then, who
knows the good he
ought to do and doesn’t
do it, sins.
Romans 7:7
(New International Version 1984, ©1984)
7 What
shall we say, then? Is the law
sin? Certainly not! Indeed I would
not have known what sin was
except through the law. For I
would not have known what coveting
really was if the law had not said, “Do
not covet.”[a
Romans 3:20
Therefore
no one will be
declared righteous in God’s
sight by the works of the law;
rather, through the law we
become conscious of our sin.
STEPS FOR ONE DAY WITHOUT SIN
FOCUS ON ONE DAY AT A TIME. FORGET ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED
YESTERDAY AND DON'T WORRY ABOUT TOMORROW. YOU HAVE ENOUGH
TO DEAL WITH TODAY.
1. PRAYER. SEEK GOD FIRST THING. START BY CONFESSING AND
REPENTING OF ANY PREVIOUS SIN. LISTEN FOR WHAT HE IS SAYING TO YOU.
ASK HIM TO FILL YOU WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT AND TO ANNOINT YOU TO
DO HIS WILL. (THIS STEP SHOULD BE REPEATED OFTEN THROUGHOUT THE
DAY.)
2. RELY ON THE HOLY SPIRIT. HE IS OUR HELPER. WE MUST
RELY ON HIM FOR GUIDENCE AND STRENGTH TO OVERCOME
TEMPTATION. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO DO IT WITHOUT HIS HELP.
3. MEDITATE (THINK DEEPLY) ON GOD'S WORD
AND CONTINUOSLY SPEAK IT. WE MUST STUDY AND SPEAK
GOD'S WORD. (JOSH 1:8) BY STUDYING GOD'S WORD, WE KNOW HIS LAWS
AND WE ARE ABLE TO SPEAK HIS WORD DURING TEMPTATION. WHEN JESUS
WAS TEMPTED BEFORE HIS MINISTRY, HE RESPONDED TO EVERY
TEMPTATION WITH THE WORD OF GOD. (MATT 4:1-11) (TO DO THIS YOU
MUST KNOW IT AND UNDERSTAND IT.)
4. OVERCOME TEMPTATION.
- LOOK FOR THE ESCAPE.
- SPEAK GOD'S WORD.
- YOU AREN'T A SLAVE TO SIN, DON'T OBEY IT.
- DON'T FOCUS ON TEMPTATION OR YOUR DESIRE FOR THAT SIN. FOCUS
ON WHAT IS GOOD, PURE, RIGHT, HOLY, HONORABLE, EXCELLENT AND
PRAISEWORTHY. (PHIL 4:8)
- THANK GOD FOR VICTORY EVEN IF YOU ARE STILL BEING TEMPTED. IT IS
THROUGH PRAISE THAT WE HAVE VICTORY.
5. IF YOU MESS UP DON'T GIVE UP. TRY IT AGAIN UNTIL
YOU GET IT RIGHT.
6. WHEN YOU GET UP THE NEXT DAY, DO IT ALL
OVER AGAIN
Hebrews 12:2 and 3:1
Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our
faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross,
scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the
throne of God.
Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, who share in the heavenly
thoughts
calling, fix your
on Jesus, whom we
acknowledge as our apostle and high priest.
Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean;
wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
8 Let me hear joy and gladness;
let the bones you have crushed rejoice.
9 Hide your face from my sins
and blot out all my iniquity.
Create in me a pure heart, O God,
and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
11 Do not cast me from your presence
or take your Holy Spirit from me.
12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation
and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.
Psalm 51
Have mercy on me, O God,
according to your unfailing love;
according to your great compassion
blot out my transgressions.
2 Wash away all my iniquity
and cleanse me from my sin.
1
For I know my transgressions,
and my sin is always before me.
4 Against you, you only, have I sinned
and done what is evil in your sight,
so that you are proved right when you speak
and justified when you judge.
5 Surely I was sinful at birth,
sinful from the time my mother conceived me.
6 Surely you desire truth in the inner parts[a];
you teach[b] me wisdom in the inmost place.

13 Then
I will teach transgressors your ways,
and sinners will turn back to you.
14 Save me from bloodguilt, O God,
the God who saves me,
and my tongue will sing of your righteousness.
15 O Lord, open my lips,
and my mouth will declare your praise.
16 You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring
it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.
17 The sacrifices of God are[c] a broken spirit;
a broken and contrite heart,
O God, you will not despise.
Hymn
Chief of sinners though I be,
Jesus shed his blood for me,
Died that I might live on
high,
Lives that I might never die.
As the branch is to the vine,
I am his and he is mine!
Oh, the height of Jesus' love,
Higher than the heav'ns
above,
Deeper than the depths of
sea,
Lasting as eternity,
Love that found me -wondrous thought!
Found me when I sought him
not.
Only Jesus can impart
Comfort to a wounded heart:
Peace that flows from sin
forgiv'n,
Joy that lifts the soul to
heav'n,
Faith and hope to walk with
God
In the way that Enoch trod.
Chief of sinners though I be,
Christ is all in all to me.
All my wants to him are
known;
All my sorrows are his own.
Safe with him in earthly strife,
I await the heav'nly life.
Strengthen
me, O gracious Lord,
By your Spirit and your word.
When my wayward heart would stray,
Keep me in the narrow way;
Grace in time of need supply
While I live and when I die
