Notes
The Circulatory System
EQ: What is the function of the circulatory
system and how does it promote
homeostasis in the body
Sections
1.
The circulatory system is divided into 3
sections:
a. coronary circulation
b. pulmonary circulation
c. systemic circulation
I. Coronary Circulation: The Heart
1.
2.
It is an organ made out of cardiac tissue
It is made up of four compartments
a. Right and Left Atriums: the upper
chambers that RECEIVES BLOOD
COMING INTO THE HEART.
b. Right and Left Ventricles: the lower
chambers that PUMP BLOOD OUT OF THE
HEART.
3. Fact: Our Hearts Contract or Beat about
once every second of every day of our
lives. The heart beats more than 2.5
million times in an average life span. The
only time the Heart gets a Rest is Between
Beats.
4. Heart attack: when the coronary
circulation is blocked, oxygen and nutrients
cannot reach all of the cells of the heart.
II. Pulmonary Circulation
1.
The RIGHT SIDE of the Heart pumps Blood
From The BODY INTO THE LUNGS, WHERE
OXYGEN POOR BLOOD (DEOXYGENATED,
USUALLY SHOWN IN BLUE) GIVES UP
CARBON DIOXIDE AND PICKS UP OXYGEN.
2.
The LEFT SIDE of the Heart pumps OXYGEN
RICH BLOOD (OXYGENATED, USUALLY
SHOWN IN RED) FROM THE LUNGS TO THE
REST OF THE BODY EXCEPT THE LUNGS.
III. Systemic Circulation
1.
Oxygen - rich blood moves to all of
your organs and body tissues, except
the heart and lungs and oxygen - poor
blood returns to the heart.
IV. Blood Vessels
1.
2.
3.
Arteries - blood vessels that carry blood
away from the heart.
Veins: The blood vessels that carry
blood back to the heart.
Capillaries: microscopic blood vessels
that connect the arteries and veins
