How about fractions?
Lets start with a meter of 4/4 (4 over 4) !
Remember…
The top number tells us
HOW MANY beats are in a measure.
The bottom number tells us
WHAT KIND of note gets the beat!
Sooooo……
A whole measure of 4/4 is like a whole piece of pie…
cut up into 4 pieces (or a dollar but don’t cut one up!) like this…

representing one beat each!
If 4 quarters = a WHOLE dollar… then
4 quarter notes would = ???
That’s right! !
4
Then since 2 HALF dollars = a WHOLE dollar… then
= a WHOLE note?
How many half notes

2!
Okay! Lets Review…
1. In 4/4 time, what kind of notes gets the beat?
The correct answer is a quarter note!
2. And how many beats per measure?
The correct answer is 4!
3. How many quarter notes equals a whole note?
The correct answer is 4 again!
Lets Review some more…
4. In 4/4 time, how many quarter notes = a half note?
2! (Just like pies, or dollars right?)
5. And how many half notes = a whole note?
2 again!
6. A trickier one… What combination of 3 notes can equal
a whole, or whole measure?
The correct answer is …
