ORDER OF OPERATIONS
What difference does it make?
Who is correct? James and Nyisha argued about who was correct. Both of
them solved the same problem and ended up with different answers. What do
you think, who is correct?

Steps for the order of operations
1.)Perform all operations inside grouping
symbols or arentheses
2.)Simplify xponents and roots
3.) Perform ultiplication and ivision from
left to right
4.)Perform ddition and ubtraction from
left to right
MATHEMATICAL EXAMPLE
7 + (6 × 52 + 3) First evaluate 5 squared inside
the parentheses.
7 + (6 × 25 + 3) Then we multiply 6 x 25 inside
the parentheses.
7 + (150 + 3) Next add150 + 3 inside the
parentheses.
7 + 153 Last add 7 + 153.
Answer: 160
REAL LIFE EXAMPLE
Joe buys 2 shirts, $8.00 each. He also buys a pair
of jeans for $20.00, for which he receives a $3.00
discount. Use the order of operations to
determine how much money Joe will spend on
two shirts and a pair of jeans, which are $3.00
off.
(2 shirts) + (jeans-discount)
(2 x $8 shirt) +($20 jeans - $3 discount)
(2 x $8) + ($20 - $3)
$16 + $17
$33 = Total cost
What do you think would have happened if we would
have added the price of the jeans to the price of the
shirts before doing anything else? Try doing this first
and see if your answer is the same!
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT

The order of operations is important because
you need to use it to simplify expressions and
equations that have more than one operation
to perform. This
explains the order in
which you should simplify different operations
such as addition, subtraction, multiplication,
division, exponents, and square roots. (click
on the process box above to view a video and
then complete two worksheets.)
