Order of Operations
Order of Operations PYRAMID
We will use this pyramid to help us
remember the Order of Operations.
There are
three
different
levels of the
pyramid.
When you
solve a
problem, you
will start at
the top of the
pyramid and
work your way
down.
Parentheses
The P stands for
Parentheses.
(P)
We always
evaluate what is
inside a set of
parentheses first.
Example: In 5 + 3 x (4+3),we would solve 4 + 3
FIRST because it is inside the parentheses.
Next: Multiplication
The MD stands for
Multiplication and
Division.
We always solve
multiplication and
division second.
and/or
Division

Don’t forget the -> above the MD!
What happens if there is
multiplication and division in the
same problem?
You would work from left to right and
do whichever operation came first. This
is why we put the
on the pyramid
above the MD! Here are two examples:
Example 1:
Solution 1:
5x6÷3
5 x 6 equals 30, and 30 ÷ 3 equals 10.
Example 2: 40 ÷ 5 x 3
Solution 2: 40 ÷ 5 equals 8, and 8x3 equals 24.
Last: Addition and/or Subtraction
(P)
The AS stands for
Addition and
Subtraction.
We always solve
addition and
subtraction third.

Don’t forget the -> above the AS!
What happens if there is addition
and subtraction in the same
problem?
You would work from left to right and
do whichever operation came first. This
is why we put the
on the pyramid
above the MD! Here are two examples:
Example 1: 5 + 6 -10
Solution 1: 5 + 6 equals 11, and 11-10 equals 1.
Example 2: 25 - 8 +10
Solution 2: 25- 8 equals 17, and 17+10 equals 27.

Now let’s use the pyramid to solve some equations!!
Let’s Try This One Together
24 - 3 x 8 ÷ (14 - 10) = _____
Now Try This One with a
Partner
2 + 18 ÷ 3 x (2 + 5) =_____
Now Try This One On Your Own
8 + 3 x 3 ÷ (10 - 7) =_____

Order of Operations Homework
Directions: Use the Order of Operations pyramid to solve the following problems.
Use another sheet of paper to show your work if you need more room.
1. (12 – 3) x 4 ÷ 2 = _____

4. 12 ÷ (5 + 1) x 2 = ______
2. 8 + 6 x 4 = ______

3. 2 + 12 ÷ 2 x 3 = _____
Feng paid a total of $18 for a glass pitcher and 6
pounds of lemons. The price of the lemons was $2
per pound. Using the equation 18 – 6 x 2 = p, what
is the price of the glass pitcher?
