Warm-up
1. X = 7 is this a solution 2x – 4 >19? Yes
or no
2. X = 4 is this a solution -5x < -3? Yes
or no
Need graph paper out!
Graph the following equation
-2x +Y = 3
6.5 graphing linear inequalities
• Linear Inequalities are graphed on the
coordinate plane just like equations.
• Only difference – many answers not on
the line.
• When graphing – must always use 3
points unless you are using the x- & yintercepts.
Steps to graph a linear inequality
1.
Sketch the graph of the inequality just like
if there was an equal signs.
a. Dashed line if it is <, >
b. Solid line if it is <, >
c. the line separates the graph into 2 halves
2. Test any point from one of the halves of the
graph by substituting it into the equation.
3. If the point IS a solution to the equation,
shade that half of the graph. If not a
solution, shade the other half of the graph.
Before sketching a graph w/2 variables, it
is EXTREMELY HELPFUL to change
the equation to slope-intercept form
Graph x + 7 > y
1. change to S-I-F (if necessary)
2. Make a t-chart & find 3 points
3. Graph the line (dashed or solid)
4. Test a point on 1 side of the line
5. shade
examples
X < -3
Y>4
You Need graph paper
Try these
1. -2x + y > 4
2. 3x + 3y < 9
