Rates, Ratios, Proportions &
Unit Rate
By Colin C.
Proportions
•a:b = c:d
• As statement that two
ratios are equal.
• Can be written as two
equal fractions.
• Can be written using a
colon.
• For example, a:b = c:d.
• If two ratios are equal,
then the cross products
are also equal.
Proportions (Cont.)
• The arithmetic
proportion is using
numbers to solve the
proportions.
• The Algebraic
proportions use
variables to solve the
proportions.
• A proportion is an
equality of two different
ratios.
• In a proportion the cross
products are equal.
• There are two methods
to proportions,
Multiplication property of
equality and cross
products.

• A rate is a ratio that
compares different
kinds of units.
• A ratio is a
comparison of two
different values.
• There are three ways
to show a ratio, for
example, 12 to
42,12/42, or 12:42.
Rates and Ratios (cont.)
• Ratios usually
compare one thing to
another.
• Ratios usefulness
comes in the setting
up and solving of
proportions.

54:22
22/34=12/8
Unit Rates

x/12.99
• A unit rate is the price
per unit of measure.
