During the 15th century, thousands of Africans were forced
to go to America to be slaves. They were separated from
their families and were forced to do hard jobs and this
made life so horrible for the Africans.
Music played an important part in the lives of the slaves
because it was their way of expressing their feelings. The
most popular instrument was the African drum.
In blues music there is much bending and slurring of blue
notes which produces a jarring sound.
The blues musicians use the call and response type of
singing.
