*CLINIC*LG: To compare numbers up to

TASK:
● Create a number statement using “smaller than” or “bigger than” to
describe the difference between two numbers.
● Calculate the difference between the two numbers and include this in
your statement.
● E.g 74 422 is 200 less than 74 222
0 as the placeholder
The number 0 can be used as a "placeholder", this helps us to write a number
properly.
Example: 502 (five hundred and two) could be mistaken for 52 (fifty two)
without the zero in the tens place. Using 0 as a place holder. Fill in the table
below by placing the 0 in the ten thousands place, thousands place and tens
place.

LG: TO RECOGNISE THE
USEFULNESS OF ESTIMATION TO
CHECK
CALCULATIONS
We use estimating when we want an approximate answer to a calculation. Rounding helps
us do this. We round numbers so we can work with them more easily in our
heads.
For example:
Look at 333 + 521
Rounding to the nearest 10, they are 330 and 520.
330 + 520 = 850
Therefore 333 + 521 is approximately 850
LG: TO RECOGNISE THE USEFULNESS
OF ESTIMATION TO CHECK
CALCULATIONS
With a partner, complete these steps to see why estimating is handy.
Step 1. Use the problem 57 – 38. Time how long it takes your partner to solve the equation
mentally.
Step 2. Now round the numbers to the nearest ten and time how long it takes to solve this
problem
Step 3. Which problem is faster to solve? Why? Write your response in your maths books.
Step 4. Can you think of an occasion you would use estimation? Write your response into
your maths books.

TO USE ESTIMATION TO SOLVE
WORD PROBLEMS
1) Sarah is saving money to go to the fair. In week 1 she saves $13, in week 2 she saves $19 and
in week 3 she saves $29. Estimate how much money she has at the end of week 3.
The show bags that Sarah wants cost roughly $15 each. If she wants to spend half her
money on show bags, how many show bags can she buy?
2) Kylie is crazy about dolphins. She has 4 889 pictures of them, 389 stuffed toys, and 481
figurines. She thinks she has about 6 000 items altogether. Is this estimation reasonable?

100 + 700
800
10,190 - 6,542
10,000 - 6,500
3,500

678,900 - 200,304
900,871 - 560,887
340,111 + 234,999
STEPS
1. Find the place value you want (the "rounding digit") and look to the digit just to the right of it.
2. If that digit is less than 5, do not change the "rounding digit" but change all digits to the right of the
"rounding digit" to zero.
3. If that digit is greater than or equal to 5, add one to the rounding digit and change all digits to the
right of the rounding digit to zero.

*CLINIC* LG: TO USE THE SPLIT STRATEGY
TO ADD TWO NUMBERS TOGETHER
• Use the split strategy/partitioning method to add these numbers. The ones in red you will need
to trade.
Example: 567 + 199 = 766
a)
b)
c)
d)
e)
1,235 + 2,462
3,876 + 5,123
7492 + 2,163
82,174 + 17,625
47,432 + 52, 844
LG: TO PARTITION NUMBERS
Use partitioning to calculate the answers to these problems
1) There were 82,694 Western Bulldogs Fans and 17,830 Sydney Swans fans at the
MCG for the 2016 AFL grand final. How many fans altogether?
2) You and your family are planning to do a big trip up the east coast of Australia! How
many kilometers do you travel in total if you take the following route:
Adelaide → Melbourne → Sydney → Brisbane → Cairns
* Use google maps to help you!
* Take the most direct route between cities
LG: TO PARTITION NUMBERS
3) In October 78,501 loaves of bread were sold at Bakers Delight. Next month, they
expect that sale to double. How many loaves of bread are expected to sell in
November?
4) In 2016, two clothes factories produced 137,231 t-shirts altogether.
If one factory produced 82,183 how many did the other factory
produce?
