Aims of the session
To inform you how early reading, writing and
mathematics is taught in Reception.
To share practical ideas for how children can be
supported at home.

• We follow Read Write Inc.
• Speed sounds sessions
• Sounds are taught in a set order

Teddy Bear Challenge
Here are the 11 stages of our
number challenge:
Ear 1:I can count 10 everyday objects.
Ear 2: I can recognise numerals 0-10.
The head: I can put the numbers 0-10 in the correct
order.
The tummy: I can find one more than a number to 10.
Leg 1: I can find one less than a number to 10.
Leg 2: I can count 20 everyday objects.
Eye 1: I can use objects to help me add two single digit
numbers.
Eye 2: I can use objects to help me takeaway a single digit
number from another.
Arm 1: I can recognise and order numbers 0-20.
Arm 2: I can find one more than a number to 20.
Bow Tie: I can find one less than a number to 20.
Ways in which Number can be
explored at school or at home:
•Role play – Counting pennies, items in basket, looking at clocks
•Number Trails- following clues, finding given number of objects
•Board games – recognising numbers, counting on/back, counting
numbers on dice
•Number rhymes – 5 speckled frogs, 10 green bottles
