SOLVING A TWO STEP
EQUATION

DEFINITION
A two-step equation is as
straightforward as it sounds. You
will need to perform two steps in
order to solve the equation.
FIRST STEP
The first goal in solving an equation is
to have only variables on one side
and the numbers on the other side of
the equal sign.
SECOND STEP
The second goal is to have the
number in front of the variable to
equal one.
2x – 12 = 5
2x -12 + 12 = 5 + 12 (Step One)
2x = 17
2x/2 = 17/2 (Step Two)
x = 8.5
