Mixed Numbers as Improper
Fractions
A mixed number is a number with a whole
number part and a fraction part.

An improper fraction is a fraction with a
numerator that is greater than the
denominator.

How to change a mixed number
to an improper fraction.

First, multiply the denominator by the whole
number 4 X 4 = 16
Then, add the numerator 16 + 1 = 17
Lastly, use the “17” as the numerator and keep
the “4” as the denominator.

How to change an improper
fraction to a mixed number.

Take the denominator and divide it into the
numerator.
9 divided by 4 = 2 but you have 1 left over.
2 becomes the whole number, 1 will be the
numerator, and keep 4 as the denominator.

On your white boards, write down 2 proper fractions,
write 2 fractions you must simplify, 2 mixed
numbers you must change to improper fractions,
and 2 improper fractions you must change to
mixed numbers.

3 4/5 = 19/5 and 2 2/3 = 8/3
20/7 = 2 6/7 and 13/4 = 3 1/4
Decimals
A decimal is a number that has at least one
place to the right of the decimal point.
Equivalent
Having the same value.
Fractions and decimals can be equivalent.
¼ = 0.25
½ = 0.50
¾ = 0.75
4/4 = 1
Converting decimals and
fractions
Type in the fraction or decimal you began
with.

Then hit the F D key.
The calculator will automatically change the
fraction ½ to the decimal 0.5 (0.50).
*Keep pressing the key until the fraction is in
its simplest form.

Repeating Decimals
A decimal that has a repeating sequence of
numbers after the decimal point.
4.5666666 = 4.56
32.34343434 = 32.34
Do Now
On your white boards, write down 5 repeating
decimals (the long version and the short
version).
Percents
A percent is the ratio of a number to 100.
A ratio is a comparison of two numbers using
division.
Percents
When you are given a decimal:
0.65
move the decimal point 2 places to the right in
order to change it to a percent.
0.65 = 65%
Fractions to Percents
If you are given a fraction, simply change the
fraction to a decimal and then move the
decimal point 2 places to the right.
