HM 14-5
Measuring Self-Destruction Behavior
Kathryn Kelley and her associates (1985)
developed a scale to measure people’s selfdestruction behavior.
They viewed self-destructiveness as a tendency
to engage in behaviors that increase the
likelihood of negative consequences or that
decrease the likelihood of positive
consequences in the future.
Chronic self-destructiveness, then, involves
behavior that will probably be detrimental to
one’s health and well-being in the long run.
HM 14-5
The Chronic Self-Destructiveness Scale (CSDS)
appears in HM 14-5. The scale measures an
aspect of personality that seems to underlie a
variety of behaviors related to the personality
disorders.
Indeed, Kelley et al. found the chronic selfdestructiveness is positively correlated with
academic cheating, traffic violations, adolescent
rebelliousness, and treatment for drug and
alcohol abuse.
In addition to these indicators of validity, Kelley
et al. report acceptable levels of reliability.
HM 14-5
If you use this scale in class, students
should be advised that scores on the
CSDS do not predict the occurrence of a
personality disorder but show only
common patterns of behavior.
The 73 items in HM 14-5 actually make up
two 52-item scales, one for each gender.
Scoring instructions for each gender
follow:

HM 14-5
Both genders should have 52 items, with
number recorded in place of a letter.
The score on the CSDS is simply the sum
of those numbers.
The following norms are from Kelley et al.
(1985):
High Score
Intermediate Score
Low Score
Women
157-260
105-156
52-104
Men
158-260
97-157
