Lesson 3.6
Translating Expressions
Translating Expressions…
When translating expressions, there are certain key words
that cue us to use certain operations.
Let’s take a look:
Operation
Addition
Subtraction
Multiplication
Division
Words that Imply the Operations
Plus, more than, sum, increased (by),
gain, more
Less than, minus, take away, decreased
(by), difference, less, fewer
Product, twice, times, triples, square, of
Quotient, ratio, half, third, divided by
Writing Mathematical Expressions…
Using what we know about key words, let’s practice
translating the following sentences into numbers and
symbols:
1. Forty-four increased by 5
44 +5
2. The product of three and twenty-five
3. Four less than a number
3(25)
n-4
4. Six less than the product of a number and nine 9x - 6
5. The quotient of a number and negative 12
x
-12
Writing Mathematical Equations…
Similarly, we can also translate equations when given a
sentence:
1. Thirty more than two times a number is equal to sixteen
2x + 30 = 16
2. The difference of eighteen and a number is equal to sixteen
18 – x = 16
3. Six times the sum of a number and five is ten
6(x + 5) = 10
4. Seven is equal to four less than the product of a and b
7 = ab - 4
5. Four times the sum of a number and six equals eight
4(x + 6) = 8
Heads Up!
Keep in mind that when you are going from words to symbols
and numbers, always go one step at a time and read
through the sentence one piece at a time to figure out the
order!
Example: When we read the sentence “17 less than a
number” that tells us we are subtracting 17 from
something else….
n - 17
Translating also works the other
way…
What happens if we are given the expression or equation,
and we have to come up with the sentence?
Same rules apply…use your key words, and work through
one word at a time.
1. n + 33
The sum of a number and thirty-three.
2. 8(y + 4)
Eight times the sum of a number and four.
3. y - 15
Fifteen less than a number.
4. 2y - 7
Seven less than twice a number.
Summary
Explain why it is important to know how to
translate expressions.
