• Assessment: Multiplication Combinations
How can we use patterns to multiple by
multiples of 10?
Here’s a problem for you to solve before we talk about it
together. Think about the work you’ve been doing on multiplying
by 10s. How can that help you with this problem?
15 x 13=
How can we use patterns to multiple by
multiples of 10?
Practice with your group to solve the following problems by
breaking apart.
1. 23 x 12=
3. 42 x 36=
2. 18 x 45=
2. 54 x 62=
How can we use patterns to multiple by
multiples of 10 and 100?

270
How can you use a grid to find the product 23 x 90?
Could we split one of the factors?
Which factor should we split to make the problem
easier???
Why would splitting 23 make the problem easier?
It would make our problem easier, because 90 is
already a multiple of 10 and now we also have 20
which is a multiple of 10.
Work with your shoulder partner to find the two
partial products.
20 x 90 = 1,800 and 90 x 3 = 270
Add partial products together: 1,800 + 270 = 2, 070
1,800
Problem: In January, Tim’s aquarium had 23 guppies. A year later, he
had 90 times as many guppies. How many guppies does Tim have
now? Find a shortcut to solve the problem.
