PROBABILITY
Mrs. Leahy’s 3rd Hour – 6th Grade
Advanced Math
What is Probability?
 Probability is the
measure of how
likely an event is to
occur.
Unlikely or Likely?????
 For each of the following questions, please
decide if you think that the event or situation is
most likely to happen or unlikely to happen.
 Put a U on your dry-erase board for unlikely
and a L for likely. Please use your own opinion
to form your own decision. Boards will be held
up when teacher asks for “boards”. Please,
erase your board in between exercises.
LIKELY OR UNLIKELY
 1.
You win the state lotto!!!!!
LIKELY OR UNLIKELY
It will snow
in July!!!!!
 2.
LIKELY OR UNLIKELY
 3. Running
laps
in gym class.
LIKELY OR UNLIKELY
 4. Your power
goes out during a
thunderstorm.
LIKELY OR UNLIKELY
 5. You
toss.
win a coin
Now, how do I find a
probability?
 A probability:
 Is a Wanted Outcome out of Total
Possible Outcomes
 Can be written as a fraction.
Probability-Example 1
 If I roll a dice once, what is the probability
that I will roll a 1?????????
 A. 1/6 One chance out of six. There is
only one 1 on a single dice, and there are
6 possible outcomes.
HINT
 Reminder: Don’t
forget to reduce your
fractions!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
 Ex. Rolling a 2 would
be 2/6. Reduced this
becomes 1/3!!!!!!!!!!!
LET’S FIND THE
PROBABILITY……………..
 Please figure out the following
probabilities on your dry-erase board.
Hold up your boards when you hear
“boards”.
 OK, HERE WE GO………………..
FIND THE PROBABILITY
 1. What is the
probability of flipping
a coin once and
getting heads?
#1 Answer
½
FIND THE PROBABILITY
 2. What is the
probability of rolling a
three with one dice?
#2 Answer
1/6
FIND THE PROBABILITY
 3. What is the
probability of rolling one
dice and getting an odd
number?
 Hint: What is an odd
number?
#3 Answer
 3/6
 Reduced: ½ This is your final answer!!!
FIND THE PROBABILITY
 4. What is the
probability of rolling one
dice and getting a
multiple of 3??
 Hint: Remember our
‘Buzz’ Game!!
#4 Answer
 2/6
 Reduced: Your final answer is 1/3.
FIND THE PROBABILITY
 5. You have a
spinner with numbers
1-20. On your first
spin what is the
probability that you
will get an even
number???
#5 Answer
10/20
 Reduced: Your final answer is ½.
REFLECTION
 Reflect: How did you do??????

REVIEW
 Probability is the measure of how likely
an event is to occur.
 Probabilities can be written as fractions in
simplest form.
Independent/Group
Practice
 With a partner you will be given a
practice probability review sheet.
 Please make sure to check and compare
your probabilities with one another.
 You may use one worksheet with both of
your names on it.
What’s Next???
 Tomorrow we will review your partner
probability worksheets.
 Next week, you will be conducting some
experimental probabilities based on
constructing your own spinners!!!!!
