What is a fraction?
• A fraction represents
a part of a whole or
part of a set.
• Example:
The pizza slice is one
part of the whole
pizza.

• There are two
numbers in a fraction.

The top number is
called the numerator.

The bottom number is
called the
denominator.
TIP: The Denominator is Downstairs

how many parts of the
whole or set you
have.
• The denominator tells
how many parts the
whole or set is divided
into.

• The circle is divided
into 4 equal parts, or
fourths.

• Two parts out of four

Two-fourths or one half

• The window is divided

halves.
