Distinguishing Between
Facts and Opinions
Listening Practice-
Numbers
It is very important to tell the difference between facts
and the writer’s opinions in the course of reading. Then
what are facts? And what are
opinions?
Facts — What really happened; objective (客观的)
Opinions — Ideas, feelings, judgements or belief
from facts; subjective (主观的)
Example 1:
Sandy sat there quietly.
Fact? Opinion?
Fact!
Sandy’s sitting there is objectively an action.
The writer didn’t make any comment on it,
nor did you.
Example 2:
It’s probably that awful music that wakes me up
every morning.
Fact? Opinion?
Opinion!
Why?
Because the writer has shown his feeling or judgment
on the music by the word awful. Is the music really
awful? It depends! Even you may not think in that way!
The biggest difficulty in
distinguishing fact from opinion:
When you agree with the writer’s opinions, you
may take those subjective things for granted, that is,
you may mistake the opinions for facts!
Example:
He’s so good looking, smart and funny.
Fact? Opinion?
Opinion!
Why?
Maybe you also think the same as the writer that he
is good looking, but it doesn’t mean other people
will accept this idea. “Good looking”, “smart” and
“funny” are just the judgements of the writer and
not necessarily the truth!
Can you distinguish between
facts and opinions here?
fact?
opinion?
a. Although there are many alarmist (危言
耸听)speeches made to the contrary
(相反), in fact, man completely controls
nuclear power plants.
Opinion!
b. The amount of money invested (投资)
annually (每年) by this government, on
environmental issues alone, is $2m.
Fact!
c. It is clear that the only reasonable
solution to return to nature is to tap
(开发) nuclear power.
Opinion!
d. Fossil (化石) fuels (燃料) provide a safe
alternative (选择) for nuclear power.
