Subtracting Integers
Subtracting Integers
To subtract integers, add the opposite of
the second integer.
Examples:
8 − 3 = 8 + -3 = 5
9 − (-5) = 9 + 5 = 14
-8 − 3 = -8 + -3 = -11
-7 − (-2) = -7 + 2 = -5
-4 − (-4) = -4 + 4 = 0
Let’s learn to subtract integers!
Subtracting Integers
To subtract integers, add the opposite of
the second integer.
Examples:
8− 3= 5
9 − (-5) = 14
-8 − 3 = -11
-7 − (-2) = -5
-4 − (-4) = 0
Now let’s talk about 0.
Zero subtracted from any integer is that
integer.
Example:
+9 − 0 =
+9
-6 − 0 =
-6
Subtracting Integer Rules


To subtract you will add the opposite of the second
integer.
Same signs – add and keep that sign
ex: 5 – -8 = 5 + 8 = 13
ex: -5 – 8 = - 5 + -8 = - 13

Different signs – subtract and use the larger
number’s sign
ex: -8 – -5 = - 8 + 5 = - 3
ex: 8 – 3 = 8 + - 3 = 5
Now let’s practice

2.
3.
4.
5.
-10 - -4 = -6
-4 - -9 = 5
2 - 9 = -7
6 - 7 = -1
-14 - -15 = 1
6. -10 - -14 = 4
7. -4 - 5 = -9
8. 6 - -3 = 9
9. -10 - -8 = -2
10.-16 - -6 = -10
If subtraction is the
operation sign that you get,
Then the second number’s sign
turns to its opposite.
Once the sign has been adjusted
and the problems been revised,
Look at the signs on the numbers
use the rules we’ve already tried.
Chorus:
Same-Add
Different-Subtract
Take the sign of the bigger number.
(Repeat)
