Least Common Multiple
The least common multiple of two or more
numbers is the least number that is in each of
their list of multiples
To list the multiples of a number, multiply that
number by 1, and then by 2, and then by 3, and
so on.
EX:
Multiples of 4: 4, 8, 12,16,20,24,…..
Multiples of 7: 7, 14,21,28,35,42,……
How to Find the LCM
To find the LCM of two or more numbers;
follow these steps:
1. List the first several multiplies of each of the
numbers (the number itself is always the first
multiple)
2. Identify the least number that appears in all the
lists.
3. If there is no common multiple in the lists you
made, find more multiples.
EX: Find the least common multiple of 4 and 7.
Multiples of 4: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28,32,…..
Multiples of 7: 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, ……
The least multiple they have in common is 28.
28 is the LCM of 4 and 7
Mrs. Hoffman wants to buy enough markers
and colored pencils for classroom supplies.
Markers come in packages of 10 and colored
pencils come in packages of 12. What is the
least number of packages of each she can buy
so that she has the same number of markers
and colored pencils?
