UNIT QUESTION
What is the definition of Mean
What is the definition of Median
What is the definition of Mode
ESSENTIAL QUESTION
Can you determine which “M” to use
in different situations?
MEAN
The mean is the average of a group
of numbers.
The mean of the numbers: 1, 4, 2,
and 5 is 3
First step: add all of the numbers.
1+4+2+5=12
Second step: divide the total by the
amount of numbers (4). 12/4=3
MEDIAN
The median is the middle number of a
group of numbers
The median of the numbers: 1, 3, 5,
7 and 9 is 5.
If there is an even amount of
numbers: 2, 4, 6 and 8, you add the
two middle numbers and divide by 2.
The median: 4+6=10, divided by 2 is
5.
MODE
The mode is the number that occurs
the most in a group of numbers.
The mode of the numbers:1, 1, 2, 1,
2, 2, 3, 1 is 1. There are four 1’s,
three 2’s and one 3. There are more
1’s than any other number.
