What is a Decimal?
What is a decimal?
A decimal is similar to a fraction in that it is not a
whole number. It is a part of a number.

When do we use decimals?
Weight (He weighed 85.5 lbs).
Temperature (It was so cold today, it was only 43.7°)
Measuring distances (example, the race was a 5 km,
but since I don’t understand kilometers, I changed it to
miles and saw that the race was 3.1 Miles long.

Have students examine the 10 x10 grid .

Roll a Decimal
On the board write the following 0._ _ _ _. Select an appropriate place
to put the digit that was rolled in order to create a number with the
largest value possible.

Plot that Decimal
Create a number line on the board. Have the number line extend from
zero to ten. Create number cards by writing a whole number or a decimal
number on each card with a marker.
Have that student go to the number line and place his card.

Brainstorming and questioning while discussing.
Oral questioning about solving addition and subtraction . Oral recap of tables to find out product
of multiplication.

Activity 1:
Tell child that he can shop for his own clothes this year, within a certain budget. Give him
the number that represents the limit of his budget, and tell him to do calculation! He'll
need to use addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division .

The goal of these games is to practice counting and adding coins to reach Rs
1.00.Place all of the coins into the paper bag
Have all players continue to draw coins on the paper until they have reached Rs
1.00. The first to Rs 1.00 accurately wins the round.

Human Place Value Game:
Pass out one card to each student.
Instruct them to make the largest number possible with the given
numbers . Keep on changing the numbers.

Prepare two sets of ten cards with a different digit on each (0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9). Mix up the cards.
The player with the greatest total scores 1 point.
