Why river valleys?


River valleys are very fertile and perfect for growing
crops and keeping animals.
What were they doing before?

They were nomads, as we discussed yesterday. It was
the Neolithic Revolution (the change to an agricultural
based society) that led to the creation of the River
Valley Civilizations
MESOPOTAMIA
THE FERTILE CRESCENT
The Fertile Crescent is the plain between the Tigris
and Euphrates Rivers.
 The Fertile Crescent had rich soil and allowed for
the growth of many crops and a surplus of
resources.
 3 disadvantages to the Fertile Crescent:

1. the flooding of the rivers was unpredictable –
following the annual flood was great drought
 2. The villages were defenseless – the plain was open
and small and so the villages had no protection
 3. The natural resources were limited – there was need
for a lot of trade for things like wood and metal

MESOPOTAMIA
THE SUMERIANS
The Fertile Crescent was first settled by the
Sumerians
 The Sumerians developed one of the first systems
of writing, invented division of time and laid the
mechanical framework for railroads!
 The Sumerians created the city-state. Citystates functioned much like modern countries.
Each city-state had its own ruler and its own
government.

MESOPOTAMIA
THE SUMERIANS
The early government in the city-states was
controlled by the temple priests. Many Sumers
believed that their farming and their livelihood was
at the mercy of the gods.
 However, during wartime, military leaders took
control of the government. Eventually, the military
leaders took permanent control.
 The military leadership eventually developed into
MONARCHIES – rule by a particular family

MESOPOTAMIA
THE SUMERIANS
The monarchies and the power given to the military
and to priests created very strict social structures
based on wealth and privilege.
 However, there was a lot of power given to women.
They were allowed to own their own property and
join the ranks of priesthood.

MESOPOTAMIA
THE SUMERIANS
As the city-states grew and the monarchs became
more powerful, they began to spread. As they
spread they took their culture, traditions and
knowledge to neighboring city-states. This is known
as CULTURAL DIFFUSION
 The Sumerians invented the wheel, the sail, the
plow, the first form of writing. They also invented
the division of time, algebra, geometry and bricks.
They also have the earliest recorded instances of
astronomy, chemistry and medicine, including
disease identification and prevention.

There's a lot of ruins in Mesopotamia.

Ticket Out:
In your spiral, draw and explain what you would
invent if you had been a Sumerian. What do you
think would have been so important that it must be
created at that time? In complete sentences, explain
your invention.
 If you can’t think of a unique invention, that’s OK!
The Sumerians came up with some of history’s
greatest, so feel free to fully explain one of their
inventions and its historical significance/how it
affects our lives today.


You may work alone or in your seating groups!
