Transcript How is a unique Cargo Reference Number (CARN)

PROPOSALS FOR PRACTICAL IMPLEMENTATION OF CARN
AND BARCODE
BACKGROUND
What is the purpose of the unique Cargo Reference Number (CARN)?
•
•
•
To eradicate problems associated with duplicate manifest numbers.
To eradicate capturing errors and ensure that electronic manifests are found and retrieved
To speed up gate processing time.
How is a unique Cargo Reference Number (CARN) generated?
•
CARN is assigned by the Manifest Processing (MPR) system after acceptance of a correct
electronic Road Freight Manifest (RFM).
How is CARN communicated?
•
Communicated by MPR in a CUSRES message to road carrier / agent who submitted the
CUSCAR.
How is CARN intended to be used?
•
•
CARN is converted by the carrier to a SARS-specified or permitted barcode which can be printed
or digitally retained for easy scanning at the Gate.
If scanning fails, the short and unique CARN number (AN8) can be used as an input to identify
and retrieve the previously submitted electronic Road Freight Manifest (e-Manifest) for arrival
processing purposes.
