REVOLUTION!!!
The Neolithic
revolution
After the Ice Ages the world started to warm
up.(change in CLIMATE!)
New plants like wheat and barley started to
grow
People started to live where these plants grew
The Neolithic
revolution
They then realized they could grow the
plants
This change from gathering to
agriculture was called the Neolithic
Revolution.
Agriculture = Farming
What is the Fertile
Crescent?
An area of rich farmland in Southwest Asia where the
first civilizations began.
(TODAY THE FERTILE CRESENT IS PART OF THE
COUNTRY OF IRAQ)

JOT DOWN YOUR ANSWER ON YOUR NOTES AND
PUT YOUR PENCIL DOWN WHEN YOU ARE DONE.
Climate: The average weather over a long
period of time.
Got it? Give yourself a silent cheer! If not,
correct your answer.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE
FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE THE
CLIMATE OF MESOPOTAMIA?
Distance from the
equator
closer = warmer
Elevation: higher = colder
Closer to sea level =
warmer
Distance from water
Near = less change
Far = more change
So what does that mean for
MESOPOTAMIA’s CLIMATE?
Near equator, so warmer in general
(roughly the same latitude as Phoenix)
In a valley, mountains to the North (no
real significant rain shadow, but low
elevation)
Near several seas
SO WHAT MADE MESOPOTAMIA THE FERTILE CRESCENT?
The land there was fertile because of the sediment carried by the 2
rivers!
CFU: WHAT IS SEDIMENT?

The dirt, rocks, minerals, and nutrients the flowing river picks up
as it moves through its channel!
CFU: If the rivers were heavy with sediment AS THEY Flowed
THROUGH MESOPOTAMIA, at WHAT COURSE OF THE RIVER
is Mesopotamia Located?
