If you burn yourself run your skin
under a cold tap
Hazards

Biology Hazards-Dissection knives,
microbial contamination

Chemistry Hazards-Toxic chemicals,
Bunsen burner

Physics Hazards-Electric shocks,
Heat
Risky Business

Before running an experiment you should carry out a Risk Assessment. Heres an
example
Experiment Title: To Show Liquids Expand On Heating
Date: Mon 18th Sept 2007
Possible Risks: burn from the Bunsen or hot liquid, cut from the glass wear
How might these occur: Messing not paying attention
Possible Prevention: Wear lab coat, put on goggles, tie back hair & clear your
workbench.
Demonstrations:
When your teacher carries out a demonstration it is usually a dangerous
experiment so be aware.
Do not jump about
Don’t distract your teacher with silly questions
Stand well behind the demonstration screen
Don’t forget to enjoy it –Science in action
Resistor Risks
Luc’s Experiments:
Be careful not to break the mirror when making a periscope if it smashes 7 yrs
bad luck plus lots of sharp glass ouch
Mind the candle flame when making a yoghurt pot viewer
When examining a slide on the microscope don’t bring the lens too near the slide
or it will crack
Sonia’s Experiments:
Go easy punching holes in the plastic bottle when making the crystal radio
Amber’s Experiments:
Hold the burning crisp over a sink when seeing how much energy is in it that way
you wont burn the worktop
Don’t cut yourself with the nail when investigating oxidation
Digs Experiments:
Wear gloves when making soap sodium hydroxide burns skin
Also wear gloves when doing the titration as the acid and base are corrosive
How Clean is your lab

Don’t leave spills on the
workbench mop them up

Have a bin for paper and another
for chemical waste

Open a window to let smelly
gases out

Stick insects
Gold fish
Hamsters
White cabbage butterflies

Chicks

WORD of WARNING- remember once they get too big & need more
space they must be moved to a new home. Plus never release them
from the lab as they could get stamped on in the corridors.
