The green
light means
it’s
working!!!
We wanted to make
something…
• Practical
– something you could actually sell
• Unique
– won’t find this on google, and there’s
definitely not a sparkfun kit for this
-Typical flaws with
traditional coffee making
methods:
• Forget to make coffee in
the morning
• Coffee maker with an
alarm feature = cold
coffee when sleeping in
When traditional
fail, you have
to go buy coffee - $$ 
-A coffee maker that starts when you get up: use a
motion detector!
-Get up when you want, and you don’t have to
remember to make coffee in the morning
Make your
coffee with a
wave of your
hand from bed!
• Components are enclosed in a
project case
• Any standard device can plug
into the case
• 2 Plug-ins
– microcontroller’s power supply
– coffee maker’s power supply
• As a safety feature, it
automatically turns the
coffeemaker off after a
programmed time. (for demo
it will be 4 minutes )
Hardware and Software in a nutshell
(or coffeebean)
We used the ATmega88 , so that more features
could be added if desired
Used the real-time clock to control coffee
maker’s safety timer feature
PIR motion sensor from Sparkfun
-$9.95
-Pulls low when it detects
motion
-Open collector; requires pull up
resistor on alarm wire
Relay to handle 120V to coffeemaker
Emitter-follower circuit to go from 40mA
(max) on microcontroller to 80mA needed
by relay.
