• With a partner, think of people who might use this
expression
• “Because I told you to” is used by a person in authority
who expects the listener to obey without an explanation
of why.
• With a partner, list people in your lives that you have
some authority over and people who have authority over
you

“My Life”: Billy Joel
• Known as the “Piano Man,” Billy Joel was born on May 9, 1949, in
New York, Billy Joel.
• He grew up on Long Island and many of his songs refer to places
from his childhood.
• Some of his well know songs include: “Piano Man,” “Scene from an
Italian Restaurant,” and “Captain Jack”
• In the 1980s, Joel married supermodel Christie Brinkley, and topped
the musical charts with "Uptown Girl" and “We Didn't Start the Fire.”
• By 1999, his worldwide song sales had topped $100 million, and he
was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
