L’imparfait When do you use it? In general, you use the imperfect to describe ongoing or habitual actions in the past. It describes WHAT WAS HAPPENING at a certain time or what USED TO BE • Example: When I was little, I used to play football. Quand j’étais petit(e), je jouais au foot. In 1990, I was living in Paris En 1990, j’habitais à Paris. IRREGULAR VERBS • The stem of irregular verbs changes but the endings stay the same: • The stem of ‘être’ (to be) is ‘ét…’ • Verbs like ‘manger’ or ‘ranger’ take an extra ‘e’ in the ‘nous’ form. This is to make the ‘g’ sound. However, the extra ‘e’ is NOT needed before ‘i’. Example: je mangeais / tu mangeais nous mangions • Similarly, with verbs like ‘commencer’, the final ‘c’ becomes ‘ç’ before ‘a’ or ‘o’ to make it sound soft. Verbs like ‘manger’ or ‘ranger’ take an extra ‘e’ in the ‘nous’ form.
