Asking a question en français
Intonation
• Intonation is the most informal (and easiest)
way to ask a question in French.
• Tu as vu ce tableau?
• Nous aimons ce croquis?
• Il peint la toile?
Est-ce que
• You can add est-ce que in both written and
formal French. Est-ce que is added to a
statement
• Est-ce qu’il aime ce tableau?
• Est-ce que la modèle a bougé?
Inversion
• Inversion is a more formal way to ask a
question. To ask a question using inversion,
reverse the subject pronoun and the verb and
add a hyphen between them.
– Tu vas au musée?
– Vas-tu au musée?
– Ne vas-tu pas au musée?
Je
• It is generally better to avoid using inversion
when the subject pronoun is je.
• The inversion with je only works with some verbs
– Ai-je bien compris?
– Où suis-je?
– Que sais-je?
• These are particularly formal and would be
impossible to pronounce with many other verbs.
• Try to invert the following:
– Je pose pour le peintre.
Il/Elle/On
• If the subject is il/elle/on and the verb ends in
a vowel, add –t- between the verb and the
subject.
– Quand pose-t-il pour le peintre?
– Cette exposition t’a-t-elle plu?
• If the noun is the subject, ut the noun first and
then invert the appropriate subject prounoun
with the verb.
– Marco expose-t-il ses œuvres dans cette galerie?
• To make a question using inversion in a
compund tense like the passé composé,
reverse the subject and the helping verb.
– Quand sont-ils allés à l’exposition?
