Subject – Verb Agreement

Singular Subject
If you use a singular subject, you need
to use a singular verb
Example:
• That girl loves tap dancing.
• My watch ticks softly.
• Anna creates dried flower art.
Plural Verbs
If you use a plural subject (more than one),
then you must use a plural verb
Example:
• Those girls love ballet.
• The boys’ watches tick loudly.
• Anna and Lily create dried flower art.
Be Careful!
Most plural verbs ending in “s” are
actually singular!
Example: She loves, He walks
Compound Subjects
A Sentence that has two or more
simple subjects
Example:
1) Harry and Lana went to the park
2) The boys and their uncle laughed a
lot
Subject/Verb in Compound Subjects
• Compound subjects connected with “and”
the verb should be plural
• Examples:
▫ Mya, Michael, and Jason sing well together
▫ Spaghetti and tacos are my favorite foods

• Compound subjects connected by or, the verb
should agree in number with the subject closest
to it
• Example:
▫ Either the cats or the dog pounces on me every
morning
▫ Anna or her brothers feed the pets each evening
