Impersonal se and passive se
• The impersonal se can mean they, one, or you:
Se abre a las ocho. Se come bien en este
restaurante.
• To talk about something that is done without
saying who is doing it, use se +
verb. In this use, called the passive se, the verb
agrees in number with its object.
se + verb Se venden frutas en el mercado.
• Passive se is also used to say what is or isn’t
allowed.
Se prohíbe fumar. No se permite comer en esta
oficina.
Preterit of -car, -gar, -zar verbs and
conocer
• Verbs ending in -car, -gar, and -zar have irregular yo forms
in the preterite.
tocar ➔ yo toqué regar ➔ yo regué almorzar ➔ yo
almorcé
• In the present tense, conocer means to know someone or
something. It has an
irregular yo form.
—¿Conoces a Pedro? —Sí, también conozco a su
familia.
• In the preterite, conocer is regular. It means to meet
someone or to see a place
for the first time.
—¿Dónde conociste a José Luis? —Lo conocí en el club
de ajedrez
Irregular preterites: andar, venir,
tener, dar, ver
The following verbs have irregular stems and
endings in the preterite.

Formal commands
• Formal commands are used when you
address someone as usted.
• Replace the final -o of the yo form with -e
to form a formal command for -ar
verbs.
trabajar: yo trabajo➔ trabaje no trabaje
• For -er and -ir verbs, replace the final -o
with -a.
tener: yo tengo➔ tenga no tenga
subir: yo subo➔ suba no suba
Spelling of verbs ending in -car, -gar, -zar, ger, and -guir changes in the formal
command forms.
tocar: toque
jugar: juegue
almorzar: almuerce
recoger: recoja
seguir: siga
• When asking two or more people to
do something, add -n to the formal
Irregular formal commands
• Some verbs with irregular formal command forms
are dar, ver, and ir.

• Use the following expressions or commands to
give directions.
ir por la calle No vayan por esa calle.
doblar a la derecha/izquierda en Doble a la

subir/bajar... hasta llegar a Suba la calle hasta
llegar a la fuente
Commands with pronouns and
review of informal commands
• For affirmative commands, attach the object and reflexive
pronouns to the end
of the command.
• For negative commands, place the object and reflexive
pronouns before the verb.
¿Quieren refrescos? Tómenlos del refrigerador.
No se suban a ese tren.
Déle una pluma y un cuaderno a la señora Ruiz.
When using informal commands, remember the following.
• Verbs such as pensar, comer, and escribir are regular.
• Verbs such as buscar, llegar, organizar, recoger, and
seguir have spelling changes.
• Dar, decir, hacer, ir, poner, salir, ser, tener, and venir
have irregular forms.
