Protecting Polar Bears
Global warming threatens population
The world's remaining 25,000 polar bears make their home in the frosty climates of Canada,
Alaska, Greenland, Norway, and Russia. Warmer than normal temperatures, however, have
caused the sea ice there to melt—the same ice polar bears roam to hunt for seals and
walruses.
Habitat loss has resulted in polar bears' losing weight, drowning, and starving to death. Fewer
cubs have been able to survive the changing conditions. For example, the polar bear
population in western Hudson Bay in Canada experienced a 22-percent decrease from 1987 to
1994.
What organizational pattern is used?
A. Cause and Effect
B. Compare/Contrast
C. Sequential/Chronological
A. Cause and Effect- Key words:

Raise the Age!
Raising the driving age in Florida is essential to the safety of
drivers. Roads are too congested to have immature drivers. First of all,
sixteen-year-old drivers are nine times more likely to get in accidents
than 17-year-old drivers, as a result of using phones for text messaging,
or calling friends while driving. Moreover, they are more likely to run
stop signs and red lights for fun. Statistics show that young drivers
cause most accidents. More than five thousand U.S. teens die each year
in accidents. The rate of crashes, fatal and nonfatal, per mile driven for
16-year-old drivers is almost 10 times the rate for drivers of older ages,
according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
What generalization does the author make?
A. The rate of crashes, fatal and nonfatal, per mile driven for 16-yearold drivers is almost 10 times the rate for drivers of older ages,
according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
B. More than five thousand U.S. teens die each year in accidents.
C. Raising the driving age in Florida is essential to the safety of drivers.
C. Raising the driving age in Florida is essential to the safety of
drivers.
The author’s argument is that the driving age should be raised.
He/she then gives statistics to back it up.
Dolphins and Porpoises: What’s the difference?
People often mistake dolphins and porpoises. Dolphins and
porpoises are both mammals in the whale family. Dolphins and
porpoises are considered to be small whales. All dolphins and
porpoises are toothed whales. However, dolphins and porpoises
________ in the type of teeth they have. Dolphins have sharp conal
teeth, while porpoises have teeth that are spade or shovel shaped. In
fact, scientists generally use tooth shape as a way of classifying an
animal as a dolphin or a porpoise. Dolphins generally tend to have a
pointy mouth or "beak" and a curved dorsal fin, but there are
exceptions.
What signal word should go in the blank?
Possible answers: Differ, are different
What to Do About: Bee and Wasp Stings
・A bee will leave behind a stinger attached to a venom sac.
Try to remove it as quickly as possible. (Wasps don't leave their stingers
in the skin after stinging, which means they can sting more than once.)
・Wash the area carefully with soap and water. Do this two to three times
a day until the skin is healed.
・Apply an ice pack wrapped in a cloth or a cold, wet washcloth for a few
minutes.
・Give tylenol or ibuprofen for pain.
・For pain and itching, give an over-the-counter oral antihistamine if your
child's doctor says it's OK
