Outdoor Environment Picture
Alabama 3rd Grade Standard: Science: #5.
Obtain and combine information to describe that
organisms are classified as living things, rather than nonliving things, based on their ability to obtain and use
resources, grow, reproduce, and maintain stable internal conditions while living in a constantly changing
external environment.
Carefully Observe
this picture.
In your Science Journal, write down one noun and
two verbs to describe it.
After you have written three words, draw one rectangle
around all 3 words. Now, Turn and Talk.
Look at this picture.
Write one noun and one verb to describe it. Draw a
triangle around these two words.
After you have written your two words, compare your
words with your shoulder partner.
Write a noun
to describe it. Draw a square around this word.
After you finish,
your word
in your group.
Look
at the
6 written words.
Compare and contrast the words within your group.
Do they have anything in common?
Look at the 3 pictures again. Write 1 word to describe
all 3 pictures.
Talk within your group. Then, circle the word and name the
Part of Speech it represents.
Observe these 3 pictures.
Write 1 word to describe all three pictures.
Circle this word.
Discuss with your group why you chose this word.
The two circled words should be the same. If not, discuss within your
group and decide on one word that would fit all 6 pictures.
Look at these 3 pictures.
Discuss within your group to decide on one word that could
describe all of these pictures.
We are surrounded by
living and non-living things.
Living
Draw a T-Chart.
In your group, create a list of
living and nonliving things.
Try to list as many different
items that you can
in
3 minutes.
Non-living
This brings up our next Science Unit from
Alabama Science Standard #5.
We will concentrate on living things
Focus on the “Living” Category in your T-Chart.
What 7 common characteristics do they all have
that places them in the “Living” category?
You have 5 minutes
Let’s look more in-depth at our Science Standard to see if it gives us
more information about living things.
From Molecules to Organisms:
Structures and Processes

Questions I Still Have
Characteristics common to all living organisms.
If something obeys just one or few
of the rules, it cannot be
categorized as living thing.
For example an icicle, although it grows
(increase it mass or length) it is still a non living
thing since it cannot reproduce, or respond to
stimuli.
Non-living things do not follow any
life processes as in living things.
Living things use the non-living
things to carry out their life
processes.
Identify the items
below as either
living
or
nonliving
by coloring only
the living
organisms.
