Articles and Demonstratives
Lesson 2-Articles &
Demonstratives
Articles are special adjectives that come
before nouns.
The words a, an, and the are articles.
Example: The telescope was mounted on a
large tripod.
Articles-The
Use the to refer to a specific item(s).
Examples:
the sun
the eye
the stars
Articles-A & An
Use a or an to refer to any one item in a group.
A is used before words beginning with a consonant.
An is used before words beginning with a vowel
sound.
Examples:
a planet
an astronomer
an hour
Demonstratives
Adjectives that tell which one are called
demonstrative adjectives.
They point out specific persons or things.
Example:
This planet is nearer to the sun that that star.
These telescopes are more powerful than those
telescopes.
Demonstratives
The demonstratives this and these point out
nearby people or things.
The demonstratives that and those point out
people or things that are more distant.
Singular/Plural Demonstratives
Singular demonstratives:
this
That
Plural demonstratives:
these
those

Directions: Write which words correctly completes each sentence.
