Nos llamamos ticos
Tico is another word to say Costa Rican.
Costa Ricans put a - tico at their words (for
example, gato: gático) and are therefore
called “ticos” For this reason, the Costa
Rican soccer team is called “the ticos”.
Las aguas termales
In costa rica there are many beautiful places
where people can spend time with nature. In
the resort of Tabacón in Arenal, Alajuela,
one can walk through tropical gardens, see
the active Volcano of Arenal and play in hot
springs.
Las carretas de Costa Rica
A well known craft in Costa Rica, known as
the cart of wood. Artisans painted carts with
traditional designs in many colors. The carts
were once used to transport coffee, but today
they are mostly used as decorations.

Cultura: Pura Vida
A frequent theme of the artist Adrian Gomez
are children and swings. These paintings reflect
the essence of “pura vida”, a popular phrase in
Costa Rica. The phrase expresses the identity of
the Costa Ricans: their optimism, tranquility
and happiness in life. They say “pura vida” to
greet friends, give thanks and respond by
saying “¿Cómo estás?”.
Cultura: La naturaleza de Costa Rica
Costa Rica is a small country, but the variety of flora
and fauna is enormous. There are many gardens and
reserves where you can observe species native to the
country. In El Jardín de Cataratas La Paz you can
walk among butterflies in a large observatory. The
most famous species in Costa Rica is the “morpho
azul” with its special color. This park also has a
hummingbird garden, a garden of orchids, five
waterfalls and many tropical plants.

In the painting, Familia en el Volcán Arenal,
Costa Rican artist Jeannette Carballo presents a
typical family from the country-side. The father
has a radio to listen to the news. The mother has
one of her daughters in her arms. The other
daughter has a book. The son has books and
notebooks for school. The family is ready to
start the day.
Cultura: Los parques nacionales
The people that visit el Parque Nacional Volcán
Rincón de la Vieja in Costa Rica can see an active
volcano, hike near waterfalls, or swim in the hot
springs. Monkeys iguanas and many parrots live in
the park. In El Parque Nacional Torres del Paine in
Chile, there are volcanoes, glaciers, rivers and lakes.
Tourists go there for camping, fishing, riding a bike,
or to observe animals such as llamas, condors and
