What is an AR verb?
• An –AR verb is a ‘doing word’ that
ends in –AR.
• Eg: hablar
mirar
escuchar
to speak
to look
to listen
In order to say who is doing the
action you need to change the
ending. Look at the examples on
the right:
La jirafa mira
The giraffe looks
El perezoso agarra
el árbol
The sloth grasps
the tree
El cebra baila
The zebra dances
How do you form AR verbs?
Step 1: Find the infinitive
E.g. bailar – to dance
Step 2: Take off the AR ending. You are left with the stem
X
Bailar
Step 3: Choose the correct subject for your verb
Yo (I)
Tú (you singular familiar)
Él/ella/Usted (he/she/you singular polite)
Nosotros/as (We)
Vosotros/as (You plural familiar)
Ellos/ellas/Ustedes (They m/f/You plural
polite)
Step five: Add the new ending to the stem
yo
Tú
Él/ella/usted
Nosotros/as
Vosotros /as
Ellos/ellas
bail o
bail as
bail a
bail amos
bail áis
bail an
