• A complement is a word or word group that
completes the meaning of a verb
• There are four main types of complements:
1. Direct Objects
2. Indirect Objects
3. Predicate Nominatives
4. Predicate Adjectives
3. Predicate Nominatives
• A predicate nominative is a
noun, pronoun, or a word
group in the predicate that
identifies the subject.
• It is connected to the subject
by a linking verb.
Predicate Nominatives
In order to find the predicate nominative, There are
2 questions you must ask:
#1: Does the sentence have a linking verb?
- The sentence MUST have a linking verb in
order to have an predicate nominative.
#2: What noun, pronoun, or word group in the
predicate is linked to the subject?
- The answer will give you the predicate
nominative.
Predicate Nominatives
Example:
A tiger is a wild animal
#1: What is the linking verb?
The word “is” is a linking verb.
#2: What noun in the predicate is being linked back to
the subject “tiger”?
The noun “animal” is being linked back to the
subject tiger. Therefore, “Animal” is the
Predicate Nominative.
A tiger is a wild animal.

First, ask:
What is the linking verb?

Second, ask:
What word or word group that functioning as a noun is
linked back to the subject?
What I wrote; What I wrote is the Predicate
Nominative.

Predicate Nominative
Notice: A predicate nominative is
NEVER in a preposition phrase.
1. Bill Russell became famous as a
basketball player.
Player is not the predicate nominative. It is the
object of the preposition as.
2. Bill Russell became a famous
basketball player.
Player is the predicate nominative.

predicate and that describes
the subject.
