5B Passive: all forms
A passive verb is a form of be + a passive participle
e.g. is baked, was worn
Some participles are irregular.
Present Simple
Active:
We bake the bread here.
Passive:
The bread is baked here.
Present Continuous
Active:
We are baking the bread.
Passive:
The bread is being baked.
Present Perfect
Active:
We have baked the bread.
Passive:
The bread has been baked.
Past Simple
Active:
We baked the bread yesterday.
Passive:
The bread was baked yesterday.
Past Continuous
Active:
We were baking the bread.
Passive:
The bread was being baked.
Past Perfect
Active:
We had baked the bread.
Passive:
The bread had been baked.
The future and modal verbs in passive
We use be + a passive participle after will, be going to, ought to, can
must, have, should, would…
The gates will be closed this evening.
The rubbish should be thrown away.
The machine has to be repaired.
The news might be announced soon.
Seats may not be reserved.
How can the problem be solved?
The passive with get
We sometimes use get with passive instead of be.
Lots of postman get bitten by dogs.
I’m always getting chosen for the worst jobs.
Last week Laura got moved to another department.
