Anybody who knows even a
little bit of Spanish knows
that Cinco de Mayo is Spanish
for May fifth.
But, what is so special about
that day? What’s the story
behind the celebration?
You’re going to find out.
Many people, who don’t
know their history at all,
guess that Cinco de Mayo
is Mexico’s version of the
Fourth of July.
No, that would be wrong. The people of Mexico won
their independence from Spain on September 16, 1810.
Cinco de Mayo traces its
origins back to the
“Batalla de Puebla”
which took place nearly
fifty years after their
… independence.
Instead of saying the
name of the battle, in
the USA, the celebration
is called Cinco de Mayo.
In 1862, Emperor Napoleon
lll had his eyes and plans set
on Mexico. He wanted to
claim it for France.
The Mexicans shouldn’t have won this battle. They
were out-manned by the French, exhausted, and had
limited resources. However, Ignacio Zaragoza and his
Mexican army forced the French to retreat at the
“Batalla de Puebla” on May 5, 1862.
Cinco de Mayo is celebrated
on a larger scale in the United
States than in Mexico.
The states bordering Mexico
(California, New Mexico,
Arizona and Texas)
celebrate with parades,
dancing and mariachi music.
The largest celebration
in Mexico takes place
in the town of Puebla.
In addition to a lot of
singing, dancing and
very delicious food, they
also reenact the Batalla
de Puebla.
