DEVELOPING INDIVIDUAL ANSWERS
•You will find answering questions in PE different from answering
questions in other subjects.
•There is no single correct answers to any PE answer.
•Your answers in PE will be unique to you.
In your answers you must show the ability to;
•Investigate performance and give clear, full detailed explanations about
your performance.
•Analyse performance and show that you understand all relevant Key
Concepts and can make sound judgements.
•Develop performance by designing and monitoring a programme of
work.
•Evaluate and analyse performance improvements.
TYPES OF QUESTIONS
There tend to be two types of questions – PROCESS & CONTENT.
In process questions the process is clearly apparent from the questions
wording.
In these questions you should be able to see how the different parts of the
question link to the cycle of analysis.

TYPES OF QUESTIONS
In content questions the content is much more prominent.
In these questions you need to ensure the content of your answer links
to the relevant Analysis of Performance process as often as possible.
Example – Skills & Techniques
Choose one activity.
When analysing your performance you will have used one of the following methods.
MECHANICAL ANALYSIS – MOVEMENT ANALYSIS – CONSIDERATION OF QUALITY
(a)
Choose one of the methods above. Explain in detail how this method was useful for collecting
information about your performance.
(b) Using the information collected in part (a), describe you Analysis of Performance results.
(c) Your performance will have been affected by;
FEEDBACK, CONCENTRATION, MOTIVATION.
Explain the importance of one of the factors in the development of your performance.
(d) Explain how you evaluated your performance with regard to the factor chosen in part (c).
WORDING OF QUESTIONS
•
The wording of questions, as well as the marks available, will provide you with an insight into the
level of detail required within your answer.
•
You need to take account of the ACTIVE VERBS that are included within the question
•
The diagram below shows how an increase in the demands of the active verb used will be reflected in
the difficulty of the question and the marks available.

•
During your answer you should use appropriate and effective language during all parts.
•
Understanding words and terms relating to performance and analysis and development of
performance is vital
•
Practice using these words in their correct context when discussing performance related ideas and
with your homework answers.
•
Take time to clarify the exact meaning of the key words. It is important, for example, that your
understanding of words like motivation, concentration and feedback is identical to other students
and teachers
•
Record in your planner definitions of key words and use this as a study aid when completing
homework tasks.

IMPROVING YOUR WRITING SKILLS
Using diagrams to help explain performance.
•
A picture paints a thousands words
•
A simple but clear diagram can explain relevant details quickly and accurately. Example shows the
importance of team principles in basketball.
•
Practise drawing diagrams as part of your preparation.
•
Diagrams should be clear, precise and easy and timesaving to produce.
•
All that is required is simple lettering and neat lines.

Using the correct grammar and presentation.
•
For the majority of your writing about analysis and development of performance you require to use
the past tense.
•
This is because you are reporting on the first three outcomes of the Cycle of Analysis, namely
INVESTIGATING, ANALYSING AND DEVELOPING PERFORMANCE.
•
It is only when you are completing the last stage of the Cycle of Analysis – REVIEWING AND
EVALUATING – you sometimes use the future tense.
•
Using the future tense would be useful when explaining your next performance goals.

Using the correct grammar and presentation.
LINKING PHRASES
•
Clear fluent writing is enhanced by carefully using different linking phrases.
•
These are most commonly used at the beginning of sentences and are helpful in explaining what you
did next and why it was important.
•
Using short linking phrases helps avoid long sentences, which can sometimes be difficult to
understand.
•
Common linking phrases –
IN CONTRAST – AT THE SAME TIME – MOREOVER – ON THE OTHER HAND – NEXT – UNLIKE –
ALTERNATIVELY – CONSEQUENTLY – FURTHERMORE – HOWEVER - ACCORDINGLY

Using the correct grammar and presentation.
PRESENTATION
•
The following points are designed to help make your writing clear, straightforward and easy to read
and comprehend.
•
Firstly ensure that your writing follows the chronological doer of what you did and why it was
important.
•
Signposting your explanation by very briefly introducing your answer is helpful, as is having a brief
conclusion to each part of you answer.
•
Always ensure you use paragraphs.
