CONJUGATION VERBS BEGIN AS INFINITIVES • What is an infinitive? • A verb in it’s original form. •How do I identify an infinitive? • Infinitives in English begin with the word “to” (ex – to skate or to draw) • In Spanish the infinitives can be identified by their endings. THREE TYPES OF INFINITIVES • There are three types of infinitives in Spanish: AR, ER & IR • AR infinitives end in AR Can you list any? patinar escuchar cocinar hablar estudiar ayudar • ER infinitives end in ER – Can you list any? Leer comer deber • IR infinitives end in IR – Escribir vivir construir – Caution: the verb ir (ir a la escuela) is different. CONJUGATION • What is conjugation? • To change a verb to show who is doing the action. • How do I conjugate? • You drop the infinitive ending and add a new one. AR ENDINGS • Each new ending has a different meaning • The endings match the subjects that are doing the action. AR ENDINGS and SUBJECTS Singular 1st person YO 2nd person Tú (familiar) = = 2nd person Usted = (formal) 3rd person Él & Ella = Plural o Nosotros = AMOS AS Vosotros (SPAIN) A Ustedes = AN A Ellos & Ellas = = ÁIS AN Note: Logically AR infinitives have A’s in their endings and the accent over the A in ÁIS! CONJUGATION STEPS 1. DROP THE INFINITIVE ENDING ESTUDIAR ESTUDI AR 2. ADD THE NEW ENDING DEPENDING ON WHAT YOU WANT TO SAY. I STUDY = YO ESTUDI O WE STUDY = NOSOTROS ESTUDI AMOS YOU STUDY = TÚ ESTUDI AS Y’ALL STUDY = VOSOTROS ESTUDI ÁIS * You do not need to include the subjects because none of them share endings. When subjects share verb endings you must identify the subject using a name or pronoun. SAM ESTUDIA ÉL ESTUDIA ELLA ESTUDIA USTED ESTUDIA Conjugation Steps 1. DROP THE INFINITIVE ENDING (To practice) practicar 2. ADD THE NEW ENDING DEPENDING ON WHAT YOU WANT TO SAY. (ella) comer = como debemos bebes come beben debéis come IR VERBS • IR verbs have the same endings as ER verbs except for the 1st person plural and the 2nd person plural. • These forms logically have I’s in them.
