Negative Tú Commands
•To tell someone who is your familiar what NOT to do,
you use negative tú commands.
Step 1: write the word “no” in front of the verb
(this is the equivalent of don’t in English)
Step 2: If it is an AR verb, put the verb in the present tense yo form,
drop the “o” and add “-es”
Ejemplo:
No hables. --- Don’t speak.
If it is an ER or IR verb, put the verb in the present tense yo form,
drop the “o” and add “-as”
Ejemplo:
No comas. --- Don’t eat.
If the verb has an irregular yo form, keep the irregularity
(stem-changing, go verbs, etc.)
-CAR, GAR, ZAR Verbs
• Verbs ending in –car, -gar, -zar will need to have a letter change before
adding the “-es” of the negative command.
c – qu g – gu z - c
Ejemplos:
No busques. --- Don’t search.
No pagues. --- Don’t pay.
No almuerces. --- Don’t eat lunch.
• There are 4 irregular command verbs.
dar = no des
ir = no vayas
estar = no estés ser = no seas
Pronouns are placed between the no and the command
(in front of the conjugated verb)
Ejemplo:
No lo comas. --- Don’t eat it.
